Regional Spotlight Artist Profile | Julie Mcgillivray
The inaugural Regional Spotlight exhibition is a showcase of artistic talent from across the region. Developed from an expressions of interest process, the exhibition brings together painting, drawing, photography, and sculptural works by artists living and working in the Wide Bay-Burnett. The Regional Spotlight initiative is an opportunity for artists at any stage in their career, working in any visual art medium, to receive mentorship and share their work at the gallery. Julie Mcgillivray is a local artist in our upcoming Regional Spotlight exhibition opening on 21st September 2024.
How long have you been making artwork?
2 years
What are your favourite mediums to work with and why?
I enjoy working with natural material, but a lot of my paintings start with acrylics on canvas. I also try and incorporate natural materials within my canvas works.
Who/what inspires or influences you?
Mostly nature. Because of my heritage, I include Indigenous contemporary features within my artwork. Most of my paintings incorporate stories concerning conservation of the land.
Has your practice and subject matter changed over time? If so, how?
It has changed a lot, with a broader range of concepts, styles and materials. Since starting my art practice, I have incorporated timber, bark, sand, shells, wrapped raffia and rust work. I also like to incorporate 3D elements like impasto.
What do you like most about living in the region?
I love the climate, the beach, the community style and there is still a lot of bush around to give me the inspiration to paint and create.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Start making art earlier.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I’m always grateful for people that want to purchase my artwork and show it on their wall. It’s a privilege to be part of their lives.
What is the most interesting feedback you have had about your work?
That the viewer loves it enough that they would like to purchase another piece, or more.
