Happy Holidays from HBRG

Back

After over two years of extensive renovations to the building and in-depth strategic planning, HBRG re-opened its doors in April.

Over the past eight months and with a new team we welcomed over 10,000 visitors, staged 9 exhibitions, provided tours for over 300 school students and 18 community groups and delivered 30 public programs.

Our exhibition program began with Wildflowering by Design (Wild/flower Women IV), a celebration of women artists from the Fraser Coast, Bundaberg and beyond, alongside leading Australian ceramicist Angela Valamanesh's About Being Here

In June we welcomed Still in my mind: Gurindji location, experience and visuality, curated by Brenda L Croft, addressing the legacies of the 1966 Walk Off at Wave Hill Cattle Station. Land, Sea and Sky curated by Les Raveneau brought together Aboriginal artists connected to Butchulla Country in a survey of current Indigenous creative and cultural practice in the region.

In September the Hervey Bay Spinners, Weavers and Fibre Artists presented Colours of Australia, an exhibition that demonstrated their generosity and community as much as their incredible skill.

Bill Henson's The light fades but the gods remain brought a darkly atmospheric experience to HBRG, while Kunmunara Carroll's ceramics and paintings in Ngaylu Nyanganyi Ngura Winki (I can see all those places) inspired viewers with their bold forms and expressive representations of the desert landscape.

Our current exhibition, Fiona Foley's Veiled Paradise surveys thirty years of the prominent Badtjala artist's career, demonstrating her tireless pursuit of truth-telling.

Veiled Paradise takes place alongside the first major commission for the gallery since re-opening and the first video artwork to join the region's collection, Janjari, which will continue to be shown throughout 2023.

The year has been full of energy and excitement as we embark on this new chapter for HBRG. We would like to acknowledge our team of casuals and volunteers for their passion and commitment and thank our visitors for their patronage and engagement with the exhibition program.

Have a safe and happy holidays, from the HBRG team.
