Celebrate the launch of two new exhibitions at HBRG, a curated group exhibition titled 'Cane' and a solo exhibition by Hervey Bay artist Wilhelmus Breikers.

HBRG-curated exhibition Cane brings together historical objects and personal accounts with contemporary artworks from local, national and international artists. The exhibition explores the history of indentured South Sea Islander workers in the Queensland sugarcane industry, bringing local stories into dialogue with international perspectives. Featured artists include, Sancintya Mohini Simpson, Dylan Mooney, Shari O’Dywer, Jasmine Togo-Brisby, Luis Vasquez La Roche, Shivanjani Lal, and Jon Vea Vea.

Presented alongside is a solo exhibition by Wilhelmus Breikers titled Eat the Moon (This is not a dystopian parable). Breikers presents a selection of works drawing upon reflective examinations of self, questions of reception and perception and interior dimensions of landscape. Led by a desire to respond literally to his surroundings, Breikers’ work invariably moves in the direction of metaphor.

Join us to celebrate the launch of these exhibitions with live music inspired by Australian South Sea Islander folk songs.
