Film Release date: 2021   Film language: German     Run Time: 1 hr 45min

This science fiction/romance directed by Maria Schrader was selected as the German entry for Best Foreign Film at the 94th Academy Awards and was first shown in March 2021 at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival, with the lead actor, Maren Eggert winning the award for the Best Leading Performance. The film follows a three-week programme where 10 leading experts have been asked to evaluate a tech company’s humanoid robots and Maren Eggert’s character Alma decides to participate in order to get funding for her own research. She takes a male robot named Tom, whom she has met at a dance club, home with her. The plot follows the development of the relationship between Alma and Tom. Finally Alma ends the experiment early but there is some further interaction before the film ends.

Critics generally liked the film with one commenting that ‘… it forces its audience to consider a future where all of your romantic needs could be met with the aid of an algorithm and a pretty face.’

About Cinema Nights

Presented by Maryborough Regional Arts Council, Cinema Nights are held monthly. Come along and enjoy Art House and foreign movies, followed by refreshments and lively discussions. Held in the Brolga Theatre's Federation Room, please enter via the rear of the building.

Important note about current supply of films

Due to various changes taking place within the film distribution world with respect to availability, types of formats, supply chain issues etc., it may be necessary to make a last minute substitution because a previously advertised film is not available. We ask that patrons exercise tolerance and assure you that the Committee is working very hard to grapple with these issues and that we will endeavour to continue to bring you interesting, thought provoking films not available via the mainstream cinema network.

Important information about Covid protocols

Although most requirements concerning vaccination and check in have now been scrapped, Covid has not gone away and the following still apply at the Brolga

  • Social distancing must be observed when entering and leaving the venue and when gathering after the screening, but masks are no longer required although of course you may wear one if you wish
  • Sanitiser will be provided and we ask that everyone sanitises their hands before entry

Of course, if you have tested positive for Covid or are experiencing any symptoms like a sore throat, cough etc., please stay home
